Friday Harbor clinched its fifth consecutive trip to the Class 2B State Fastpitch Tournament with dominant victories over traditional foes at the District 1 Softball Tourney at Sedro-Woolley Saturday, May 18.
The Wolverines walloped Orcas Island 11-1 in five innings for the district crown and the district’s lone state berth. Friday Harbor (13-4) advanced to the district title contest with a 19-0 three-inning victory over Concrete (3-16). The Vikings (10-8) trimmed Darrington (6-13) by a run — 8-7 — in the other semifinal. Friday Harbor opens state tourney action against Liberty (13-5) at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24 at Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
The district champs used savvy and speed to score first against Orcas. Senior Thea Seitz worked a walk, stole second and scored on a throwing error to put the Wolverines up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Orcas tied the game in third inning after sophomore Emma Rodgers reached base on an error and scored on a fielder’s choice and error.
Bailee Lambright ripped a two-run homer to put the Wolverines up for good in the bottom of the third. The junior drove in freshman Elle Perkins — a pinch-runner for senior catcher Ava Hoffman, who reached base on an error.
Wolverine seniors keyed a six-run outbreak against the Vikings in the fourth. With one out, Seitz blasted the ball over the centerfield fence. Hoffman’s hard base hit up the middle drove in sophomore Bristol Halverson, who had singled and stole second. Senior Jayna Ott’s single sent home Perkins, Hoffman’s pinch-runner, and Lambright, who reached base on an error. Ott eventually scored on an error and freshman Olivia Germain singled in junior Liz Cruz, who rapped a base hit and stole second.
Seitz led off the fifth with a base hit and scored on Hoffman’s line-drive double. Pinch-runner Perkins advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the game-ending run as Cruz reached base on an error.
Senior Siri Lindstrum struck out three, scattered eight hits and walked one in earning the victory.
Ott smack a double and Seitz and Hoffman cracked a triple apiece in Friday Harbor’s win over Concrete. The Wolverines scored eight runs in the first inning and 11 in the second against the Lions.
