Almira/Coulee-Hartline beat Lopez Island 72-15 Thursday, March 1 at the Class 1B State Tournament in Spokane. The Lobos move to the consolation bracket and play Neah Bay in a loser-out contest at 12:15 p.m. Friday, March 2.

Lopez girls advance to elite eight in state

Lopez Island High School girls basketball team advanced to the elite eight of the Class 1B State Tournament after a 59-42 victory over Taholah Saturday, Feb. 25 at Timberline High School in Olympia.

The Lobos next play at the Hardwood Classic March 1-3 in the Spokane Arena. Lopez opens quarterfinal play at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1 against Almirante Coulee Hartline.

Dunn finishes 1st, Brumsickle 4th in regionals Saturday

210-dsc_3592Willy Dunn captures regional title, to make fourth trip to Mat Classic Friday Harbor's Willy Dunn earned his fourth consecutive trip to the state wrestling tournament - the Mat Classic – by pinning his two foes at the 1A Regional Championships at Bellevue Christian High School Saturday, Feb. 11.

"Willy has come through all year long," said Friday Harbor coach Neil MacDiarmid. "It's good to see him finishing strong."

"I'm looking forward to it a lot," Dunn said of competing in next week’s tourney at the Tacoma Dome. "It's my last year, so I might as well savor it."

Life Christian ends Friday Harbor’s hoop season

210-008Life Christian edged Friday Harbor 55-49 Saturday, Feb. 11 by stemming a Wolverine second-half rally. The Eagles improve to 14-7 and advance to the Tri-District Tournament’s second round. The Wolverines finish the season 16-6.

Friday Harbor led most of the first quarter as Collin Williamson scored nine of his team-high 16 points. "We miss him, he’s a good player," said Life Christian coach Mark Lovelady.

Williamson’s old team chipped away and took a 12-11 lead into the second period.

Eight Wolverines to compete in regional wrestling meet Saturday

Senior Willy Dunn leads a squad of eight Wolverines competing in the Class 1A Regional Tournament Saturday at Bellevue Christian High School. The top three finishers of each class advance to the State Meet and the fourth-place finisher attends as an alternate.

The double-elimination regional competition begins at 10 a.m.

Bellingham man wins $10K in fishing classic, Hodges of FH tied for 2nd

Jason King of Bellingham held onto his lead in the 2012 Annual Salmon Classic Invitational at Roche Harbor and took home $10,000 cash for his 16.6 lb chinook.

A tie for second resulted $4,000 each for Brian Dennis of Lake Tapps and David Hodges of Friday Harbor. Jennifer Payne of Friday Harbor won the $2000 mystery fish prize.

King, a Roche Harbor Classic regular, hooked the winning fish on the east side of Waldron Island about 9:45 a.m. Friday. "I was just kind of happy to see it was clipped," he said of the hatchery chinook.
