Beloved Friday Harbor resident Steve McMurtrie passed away peacefully at home last Friday, after calling San Juan Island home for the past 37 years.

Known for his warm smile and cheerful spirit, Steve never missed an opportunity to wave or stop and say hello. He deeply loved his island home, its natural beauty, and the close-knit community that surrounded him.

Many in Friday Harbor knew Steve best as the town’s Santa Claus. For 26 years, without fail, he donned the jolly red suit, bringing joy and holiday magic to generations of local families.

Steve is survived by his longtime partner, Joan; his four daughters, Amy, Shannon, Deanna, and Mariah; and his three cherished grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
