List of holiday celebrations on San Juan Island

Celebrating the Fourth of July on San Juan Island means a whole day of activities. Starting with fun runs in Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor, the parade at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Friday Harbor, followed by the Pig War Picnic and  Rock the Dock. Meanwhile at Roche Harbor, the afternoon is filled with log-rolling competition, blind-folded dinghy races, donut-eating contests. Firework shows occur at 10 p.m. in Friday Harbor and at 10:30 at Roche Harbor. Details below. 


 San Juan Fitness Club's 12th annual Firecracker 5,000 Fun Run - takes place on the 4th of July starting at Friday Harbor Suites (Best Western) at 680 Spring Street in Friday Harbor. This family tradition is all set to go. The route will remain the same, beginning at the Friday Harbor Suites, 680 Spring Street. The course is for anyone wanting to start the holiday off with a little exercise and features some of the islands flattest terrain, except for all the hills. Registration starts at 7 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m. Registration is $5 for under 16 and $10 over 16. T-shirts are $5. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the Friday Harbor fireworks display.

FRIDAY HARBOR PARADE -  The theme of the 2018 Fourth of July Parade in Friday Harbor is "Music of America, Celebrating music through the decades". The parade which proceeds down Spring Street begins at 10:30 a.m.

The parade not only celebrates America’s independence, it also will honor the island community and the amazing people and organizations that enrich our lives. This year’s Grand Marshal is Warren Jones and “Citizens of Honor” are Anna Maria de Freitas and David Pass. Each has made significant community contributions and has shared so much of their time and talent with San Juan County making them outstanding choices.

PIG WAR PICNIC  - The Friday Harbor Kiwanis host the annual Pig War Picnic following on the grounds of the San Juan Historical Museum on Price Street in Friday Harbor following the 4th of July parade. 

Lunch - $10 meals of pulled pork sandwiches or kosher dogs with coleslaw, chips, pickle and drink - will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. Kids' meals are $5. Hot fudge sundaes are $3. There is also a beer garden. 

Opening ceremony with the American Legion and Pat O'Day is at 12 noon followed by rock band Duke and Mojo Nation. From 12:30 to 2 p.m. kids can enjoy old-fashioned games including the ever popular egg toss. 

At 1:15 p.m. O'Day will announce the parade winners. The donut eating contest begins at 2:15 p.m. and the final musical act of the picnic is Mr. Steve & the Harmoneers  play at 2:30 p.m. 

ROCHE HARBOR ACTIVITIES  The annual July 4th celebration at Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island includes some of the zaniest competitions in the county. Activities include:

9 am - 5K Fun Run

10:30 am- 12:30 pm - Kids Games at Pool Lawn

12:30 - 2:30 pm - Donut Eating Contest at West Lawn

3:30 pm - Blindfold Dingy Race

4 pm - Log Rolling

10:30 pm - Firework Show

ROCK THE DOCK - Dance to the music of the Duke & the Mojos from 6 to 10 p.m. July 4 at the annual Rock the Dock at the Port of Friday Harbor.  Join the party and enjoy great music, food, spirits and dancing. Stay and watch the fireworks after the dance. 

FIREWORKS in FRIDAY HARBOR  - Thanks to a generous matching grant from Kings Market and lodging tax funds from the Town of Friday Harbor, the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce has once again commissioned local talent and pyrotechnical director, Nick Gislason, a 5th generation San Juan Islander, with the Lopez Community Fireworks, to design, setup, and fire the 2018 Friday Harbor 4th of July Fireworks Display. The 2018 fireworks display promises to be as good if not better than last year's fireworks. The display will start at 10 pm after a fun-filled day of 4th of July festivities.
