West Street in Friday Harbor will be renamed Verne’s Way. The honorary renaming means the street sign will include both names.
Friday Harbor Town Council voted to honor Verne Howard for his lifelong commitment to the support of the community well-being, charity and civic engagement. Kevin Holmes presented the draft proclamation to the Friday Harbor Town Council on behalf of Barb Persinger with endorsement from Steve Buck, Jerry and Dina Alhadeff and other community members.
Acknowledging that Verne Howard consistently shuns public recognition, it was felt and agreed by many that he should be publicly thanked and recognized for all he has contributed and continues to contribute to our community while he is still present to be thanked and recognized in person.
Holmes sought prior approval and support of the idea by Verne and his family. Verne Howard owns King’s Market, Market Place in Friday Harbor. He is an investor in San Juan Brewery. He is well known as generously supporting numerous community events and programs.
