Nov. 13: Island Rec's Pickleball begins In Friday Harbor

Pickleball at the Fairgrounds begins Wednesday, November 13. Join Island Rec in the sport that is sweeping the nation. Pickleball is a fun sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It has simple rules that make is accessible to a wide range of age ranges and skill levels.


Nov. 30: Island Lights Festival in Friday Harbor

The Island Lights Festival will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2019 on San Juan Island. This kickoff event for the Friday Harbor Winterfest is sponsored by the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce, Island Rec and the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild.

Dec. 14 Christmas Bird Count in the San Juan Islands

From Christmas Bird Hunts to Christmas Bird Counts -119 Years of Counting

In 1900 ornithologist Frank Chapman along with other conservationists were disturbed at the slaughter of birds in the annual holiday event called the "side hunt". The team that shot the most birds and other small animals was the winner. As a protest, Chapman organized 27 friends in 25 locations on Christmas Day, 1900 to count live animals instead of shooting them.


Nov. 27: Free Day at State Parks

There are two  "free days" at Washington State Parks in November. A Discover Pass is not required to park on November 11 and November 27.  Please note, free days apply only to day use (not overnight stays or rented facilities). A Discover Pass is still required to access lands managed by the Washington state departments of Natural Resources and Fish & Wildlife on these days. State parks in the San Juan Islands include Moran State Park on Orcas Island, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island and Lime Kiln Point State Park on San Juan Island.
