Friday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m. Friday Harbor (1-1) vs Annie Wright (0-2) at Stadium

For the second week in a row the Wolverines will take on a member of the 1A Nisqually League…last Friday Bellevue Christian here at home and this Friday Annie Wright in Tacoma.

This will be the first time the Wolverines have gone against the Gators.

You may be thinking, wait a minute, haven’t they played a Tacoma team with that name before?  Similar, but nope…that would be Charles Wright and like Annie Wright they are also in the City of Destiny.

This week’s foe goes way, way back.  Annie Wright opened before 1889 when Washington became a state.  AW’s first classes were in 1884 and it was a school just for girls, and it remained that way for decades.  Young men were eventually welcomed in 2017.

The Gators opened on the road at Kings and lost 42-12.  They lost last week 14-13 to Cedar Park Christian, the same team that topped FH 28-21 in the season opener.

Odds and Ends

* Annie Wright is the 84th school the Purple and Gold have played in 53 years.

* The Gators will be the seventh school FH has played from Pierce County.  The Wolverines are 11-13 (Cascade Christian 2-1, Charles Wright 5-5, Foss 1-0, Life Christian 2-2, Orting 1-0, Tacoma Baptist 0-5).

Rankings: WIAA RPI – Friday Harbor tied for 10th 2B, Annie Wright tied for 29th 1A

                 MaxPreps – Friday Harbor 10th 2B, Annie Wright 21st 1A

                 Evans Rankings – Friday Harbor 8th 2B, Annie Wright 31st 1A

Stadium High School in Tacoma WA

Stadium High School

* Players, and fans attending the game, will see one of the coolest high schools in the state.  Stadium opened 120 years ago in 1906 and the football field in 1910.  The building is a French châteauesque structure, nicknamed the Brown Castle and one of the most iconic schools in the Pacific Northwest.  The buildings sits far above the field.

* Fun fact #1 from Wikipedia: “the school has been host to many historical figures including: Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding, presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, World War I hero General John “Black Jack” Pershing and John Phillip Sousa’s band.”

* Fun fact #2 from Wikipedia: Two former Washington governors graduated from Stadium – Albert Rosellini in 1927 and Dixy Lee Ray in 1933.

* Fun fact #3 from me, Bruce Bennett: And by far and away my all-time favorite Stadium alum is 1924 grad – Bruce Bennett.  Well, his real name was Herman Brix, but he became a Hollywood actor and the name was changed to Bruce Bennett.  He was a shot putter and football player at the UW  and at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam he set a world shot put record that lasted for 41 minutes until the next man up broke it.  He was the seventh of 15 actors that played Tarzan in the movies.
